Welcome to the 'Battle of the Phoenix and Griffin' Online Martial Arts Tournament page! Here you'll find everything you need to know about this exciting competition.

The Legend of the Phoenix and Griffin

This unique, online martial arts tournament is designed to provide for maximum participation! From ages 5 to 50+, participants can enter multiple divisions and compete against others, both in their own dojo and against others from different dojo! They may also display their skills anywhere, at anytime! Events include: Kata and Taolu, ( Traditional, Non-Traditional, WEAPONS forms.); Self-Defense Demonstrations; Sparring ( Either In-school or against others from different dojo across the world!); Judo and Shuai Jiao.

Divisions and Fair Play

Tournament Rules, Regulations and guidelines:

AGES 5-7, 8-10, 12-14, 15-17, 18-20, 21-25, 26-30, 31-35 and 36+ ( Masters.)

Belt ranks: White through Black belt and above. Participants compete against those of their ages, belt ranks and gender, if applicable.

Judging Criteria and Tournament Structure

Tournament structure:

Kata or Taolu: Participants are judged  using a 3 point value, system on the following criteria: Balance, focus, power, consistency, transition and intensity. Judges will add the total points and determine 1st, 2nd and 3rd place finishers.

Self-defense demonstrations: Participants are allowed up to 3 minutes to display their skills and are graded, using a 3 point system, measuring, effectiveness and efficiency of techniques as well as fluidity and transition.

Sparring: ( In-school, both point sparring and continuous sparring: NO PUNCHES, HEAD BUTTS, ELBOWS, KNEES, TO FACE, HEAD OR NECK AREAS! The first infraction will result in a warning, 2nd infraction results in disqualification. AGES 5-17: NO STRIKES TO FACE, HEAD OR NECK AREAS, 18 YEARS OR OLDER: ONLY KICKS TO FRONT OR SIDE OF HEAD, WILL BE ALLOWED. TWO INFRACTIONS RESULT IN DISQUALIFICATION!

NO STRIKING DOWNED OPPONENT OR UNSPORTSMANLIKE CONDUCT WILL BE TOLERATED. ANY VIOLATION, OF SUCH WILL RESULT IN AUTOMATIC DISQUALIFICATION AND RESTRICTED ENTRY IN ANY FUTURE, TOURNAMENT SPONSORED BY MIKE'S MULTI TRAINING, LLC.

Scoring/rules/time limits and rest periods( Both point sparring and continuous sparring): Ippon: 3 points for kick to front/side of head 18 yes and older, only! Wana Ari: 2 points for k8ck or knee to midsection. Yoku: 1 point for punch to body.Time limits/round/rest periods: 5-7 year olds: 2, 1 minute rounds; 30 seconds rest between rounds; 30 second tie-breaker, up to 3 rounds. ( If no winner is declared after 3rd tie- breaking round, the match ends in a tie.)

8-10 year olds: 2, 1:30 sec.rounds; Rest periods and tie- breaking will remain the same as previous. 12-14 years olds: 2, 2 min. rounds; Rest periods and tie-breaking, same as above. 15-17 year olds: 3, 2 minute rounds; Rest and tie-breaking rounds, same as above. 18 year olds and above: 3, 2 minute rounds; Rest and tie-breaking rounds, same as above. 

** Inter-school sparring format: ALL ages: Performance any series of techniques on a heavy bag or the like, using the same timing format for in-school sparring with the exception that head/face and neck strikes ARE ALLOWED!

Scoring: Follow the same scoring as 18+ year olds. All scoring is as follows: Total of all strikes, demonstrating power and accuracy. (NOT THE TOTAL AMOUNT OF CONTACTS!)

** IMPORTANT!! ALL SCORING WILL BE THE RESPONSIBILITY OF THE MMT, JUDGES.

ALL SENSEI ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR FILMING THEIR STUDENTS, ENTRIES OF PARTICIPANTS AND TIMING AS PER EVENTS THAT REQUIRE SUCH.

ANY PARTICIPANTS WHO WISH TO ENTER WITHOUT REPRESENTING A DOJO, MAY DO SO AND ARE REQUIRED TO FILM, SUBMIT THEIR ENTRIES AND TIME THEMSELVES,  ACCORDINGLY. 

Breaking:

Divsions: Boards: Spacers and no spacers; AGES 5-12: (10"×12"×.5" boards, only.) 1 attempt per breaking demonstration. 

AGES: 13+ : (10"×12"×1" boards only) 1 attempt per breaking demonstration.

No Spacers: ALL participants 12 years and younger must wear hand, elbow or foot protection, as per the type of break.

Spacers: only 1/4" spacers, between boards may be used. (Participants and/or Sensei must indicate if your break is a "Spacer," break.)

Concrete Blocks: 13+ years only. 16"×8"×1" blocks weighing 13.5 lbs per block may be used, only!

Scoring: Points are awarded for the amount of boards and/or concrete blocks, broken. ( No points are awarded for partial breaks.) Example: 3 boards, broken = 3 points.

** All participants 12 years and younger must wear protection (see above.) Participants 13+ years may use a folded hand towel, atop the first block. (Only 2 folds, allowed!)

Mandatory protective equipment ( ALL SENSEI and PARTICIPANTS,  PLEASE READ!)

ALL PARTICIPANTS MUST WEAR:

Sparring (In-school.) foot pads ( Foam, which covers- instep, side of foot, heel.)

Mouthpiece: A properly fitted, mouthpiece.

Protective cup: All male participants must wear a protective cup.

Hand pads: Foam hand pads which cover the fingers, wrist, thumb. (Martial art point sparring gloves or the like, only- NO BOXING OR MMA GLOVES!)

Chest Protector: All participants must wear a WKF approved chest protector. 

Optional protection: Foam shin, instep protection, may be worn.

Gi (Uniform): All participants must wear a gi with their logo, clearly visible as well as their their current belt and/sash, which signifies their rank.

Weapons forms: Ages 5-12 blunt edged weapons only; Ages 13+ traditional weapons only or blunt edged, traditional only!
